The LM2596 family of voltage regulators are monolithic integrated circuits that are perfect for the quick and straightforward construction of a step-down switching regulator (buck converter).
These series’ circuits can all drive a 3.0A load with good line and load control. These devices are available in 3.3V, 5.0V, and 12V fixed output voltages, as well as an adjustable output version. These regulators were created with the goal of reducing the number of external components in order to simplify the power supply architecture.
Many inductor manufacturers provide standard series inductors designed for use with the LM2596. Since the LM2596 is a switch-mode power supply, its efficiency is much better than that of typical three-terminal linear regulators, particularly at higher input voltages. In many circumstances, the power dissipated is so low that no heatsink is needed, or its size may be significantly decreased.
Many vendors provide a standard series of inductors tailored for use with the LM2596. This feature simplifies the design of switch-mode power supply significantly. The LM2596 has a guaranteed +/- 4% output voltage tolerance within defined input voltages and output load circumstances, as well as a +/-15% oscillator frequency tolerance (+/- 2% over 0°C to 125°C).
Excellent combination shutdown is incorporated, with a standby current of 80A (typical). shutdown is incorporated, with a standby current of 80A (typical). A two-stage frequency decreasing current restriction for the output switch and an excessive temperature shutdown provide comprehensive protection under fault situations.
