New ESP32-WROOM-DA Module

Very excited to tell you all that Espressif Systems has announced the launching new ESP32-WROOM-DA module. The most remarkable thing about this module is that it has a dual PCB antenna to achieve high-quality and Long-Range wireless connectivity across large areas. This post will cover an intro to this new module with all specs that Espressif has provided, so stay tuned with us to know more about it.

Intro to ESP32 WROOM DA:

ESP32-WROOM-DA has two complementary PCB antennas in different directions. Additionally packed with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth (Classic & Low-Energy) connectivity and its low-power consumption modes, the users of ESP32-WROOM-DA will be able to bring to life a wide range of complex IoT application scenarios.

The new antenna design has given a pleasant aesthetic appearance to the module. The module looks like the shape of a house.

The unique antenna design of the ESP32-WROOM-DA module provides excellent wireless communication, even under challenging circumstances.
Thus, makers using ESP32-WROOM-DA can now develop IoT applications that need stable connectivity over a broad spectrum or deploy Wi-Fi in challenging and hazardous environments.

Espressif has declared the following new features that new module will serve-

  1.  High-quality and stable wireless connectivity.
  2.  Long-Range wireless connectivity across large areas.
  3. The module can switch between its two antennas based on wireless network strength.
  4. Overcome communication problems in Wi-Fi-dead spots.

ESP32-WROOM-DA Module Specification:

The ESP32-WROOM-DA module has a built-in ESP32-D0WD-V3 chip

The chip comes with the following specification-

  • Xtensa® 32-bit LX6 dual-core processor.
  • The maximum frequency of 240 MHz.
  • SRAM of 520 KB
  • ROM of 448 KB
  • 16 KB SRAM in RTC

ESP32-D0WD-V3 is an updated version of an ESP32-D0WD chip. The new V3 chip is known as ECO V3. Espressif has recently released one wafer-level change on the ESP32 Series in ECO V3.
You can find all significant design change in the ECO V3 chip.

Espressif has stated that this new module works according to signal strength, selecting the strongest signal to ensure continuous communication. When a weak signal is detected, the module continues to work with an API call that helps it switch to the other antenna with a stronger signal.

ESP32-WROOM-DA Pinout:

Espressif new ESP32-WROOM-DA is pin-to-pin compatible with ESP32-WROOM-32E. Due to this pin compatibility, users of old ESP32-WROOM-32 modules will find it quick and easy to change to a new module. Apart from Espressif claims, ESP32-WROOM-32E has exact pin compatibility as widely used ESP32-WROOM- 32D. Therefore the new module should be pin-compatible with all those boards based on ESP32-WROOM-32D also.

Where To Buy ?

The ESP32-WROOM-DA is now available on Adafruit. Check out this link to buy the ESP32-WROOM-DA Module.

Conclusion:

This new module will be a complete game-changer in the field of IoT as well as IIoT. Due to its unique antenna designs, IoT devices would be capable of being deployed in areas where it was not possible before.
All to be said, we are waiting to get our hands on this new module to share what this module is capable of.

The ESP32-WROOM-DA module uses GPIO 2 and GPIO 25 to select which antenna is active. These are referenced from the datasheet for the module in table 3 (just after the pin assignment list). Make sure you are selecting “ESP32-WROOM-DA Module” in the boards menu which has additional defines added to enable dual antenna mode support.
